13 Oct. 1997 Timothy K. Price 1 Box 143 A Fairlee, VT. 05045 Dear Mr. Price, Thanks for your recent letter about continued interest in possible "readings" of new works by the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. I spoke of our interest in such a project several years ago with Gilles, but while the interest was high, concern about the associated costs and other practical considerations was overwhelming. A project like this would cost thousands of dollars, even for just a few hours of reading time. (assuming we're talking about basic symphonic forces), certainly no less than $10,000. Realistically, I don't see a source for those kinds of funds among our current supporters, but maybe you have such a source? Even so, our commitment to new music remains high. Earlier this month, we commissioned a new piece from Gwyneth Walker, and performed it 8 times across Vermont. We also premiered a new work by composer, Kevin Putz, a marimba concerto, and presented it four times. On Cot. 24, we'll be performing a recent concerto by Edgar Meyer at the Flynn, as well as new music by mark O¹Connor next May. In all, new or recent music will be presented at nearly twenty VSO performances this season, a record of which we are quite proud. Let me know if you have other ideas which might help us move forward with the "reading" project With thanks and best regards, Thomas Philion
